Ruth's photo journal is a collection of pictures and reflections that celebrate places and our connection to them. She reflects on how landscapes shape us and how we shape landscapes. Each journal entry is a snapshot of place through her eyes.
Keep one yourself. Write about what you notice. What makes a place matter? Photo journals are not about being a tourist. They’re about breathing in your surroundings — slowing down, looking closely, and seeing the stories waiting in your own corner of the world.
Start with: Wellspring: Abundant bloom, quiet joy, and a family’s springtime ritual.

Queenston Heights Park brings together history, scenery, and recreation in one remarkable location. Perched atop the Niagara Escarpment, the park offers walking trails, picnic areas, gardens, and sweeping views of the Niagara River. It is also home to important historic landmarks and marks the southern end of the Bruce Trail, Canada's oldest and longest marked footpath.
In the early nineteenth century, St. Catharines mill owner William Hamilton Merritt proposed building a canal that would connect Twelve Mile Creek to the Welland River. His vision was to create a route that would allow ships to bypass Niagara Falls and move safely between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.
Chippawa Creek is a beautiful example of conservation in action. Careful stewardship of the area has created a thriving wildlife habitat while still allowing the public to experience the Welland River up close. Visitors can enjoy quiet access to nature, making it a special destination for both recreational explorers and those interested in observing local wildlife.
