Good things to read.

Everyone can read. Everyone can write.

Mission: We believe literacy grows best in supportive human environments where reading connects naturally to life and conversation. The Ampleton family embodies that belief — supporting each other's learning through conversation.

The reading material below is written by the Ampletons — a fictional family learning and growing together. They don't always agree and that's okay.

This family writes not just to share stories—but to model what it means to create, support, and grow in each other’s company. These aren’t lessons. They’re glimpses of what it feels like when we reclaim warmth and purpose together.

Note: If fiction is not your thing, we have practical reading exercises for buying a car; writing letters; training a dog; ordering at restaurant; playing cashier; and lots more.

Amber
What shapes us.
The very short stories are written by Anna - nicknamed Amber by her brother Sam. Amber is the viewpoint character in most stories. Some stories were written when she was still young. As an adult, Amber dreams of being a full time writer. She is working on that first novel. Amber is engaged to Michael. Amber is planning the wedding and looking for the home she will share with Michael after the wedding.

Samuel is married to Ruth. They have two children - Linda and Kevin.

Everyone writes and you can read along!

Reading comprehension, especially for adult learners, is often strengthened through conversation. Many of the topics on this site are designed to encourage discussion between learners, coaches, friends, or family members about everyday things. Relaxed conversation is thinking happening out loud.

Note

What’s the difference between a Photo Journal (Ruth's contribution) and a Vignette (written by Amber)? Our Photo Journals explore the world around us — the places we live, walk, and notice. They focus on the present moment and the physical environment.

Amber’s Vignettes are different. They explore emotional place — shaped by memory, story, and meaning. A photo journal helps us see what’s in front of us. A vignette helps us feel what’s within us.

Reading materials are designed to introduce you to different writing formats. So as you read along, if you like, you can also use the piece as a template for writing.
