Building a Learning Fortress

Learning to read with materials for self study and coaching.

Mission Statement

This site exists to support personal agency through literacy.

Reading and writing are more than skills—they are tools of independence, healing, and self-expression. Whether you're a learner finding your voice or a coach helping someone else find theirs, this space is for you.

You'll find quiet support here, not pressure.
No grades, no ads, no judgment—just a place to grow.

The site is designed for adults who want to build a strong reading foundation. You can practice on your own with audio support, work with family or friends, or meet with a coach online. It's flexible, respectful, and easy to use.

This site does not claim authority or moral direction. I am a reader too, learning how to direct my attention and question thoughtfully. Critical reading is not reserved for specialists; it is a civic skill.

Here, learning is self-governed—the ability to think, decide, and grow without pressure or performance. Independent thought matters more than ideological alignment.

Objectives

There's no sign-up, no tracking, no ads, and no funding behind it—just an open invitation to use what helps.

If you're a learner or a coach, your ideas matter. What would help you feel stronger, freer, or more confident? Use the contact information below to share your thoughts.

Anna Ampleton - Why a Pen Name?
Because this project isn’t affiliated with an institution, I’ve chosen to use a pen name to keep it separate from my personal life. It’s a common practice among writers—both past and present. Mark Twain, George Eliot, and even J.K. Rowling all wrote under different names at times. For me, it’s simply a way to maintain privacy and keep the spotlight on the work itself.

Why the Ampletons Are Bunnies

Don't worry. This is not overplayed.

You may notice that the Ampletons are bunnies. This was a creative choice made for a few reasons: to connect them with Amber’s novel (which also features bunnies), to avoid assigning them any particular race or background, and to help keep the tone of the site warm and welcoming. Bunnies can be found almost everywhere in the world, so they’re a gentle reminder that learning and belonging are for everyone, no matter where you’re from. Using animal characters lets us focus on shared human experiences—like growing, wondering, and overcoming challenges—without distraction.

Why I use AI as a literacy tool

Why have I used AI on this site? To save time building content that I can offer freely—without requiring funding. I also want to demonstrate that you—a volunteer or a learner—can use these tools thoughtfully.

I primarily use AI to generate content that is not copyrightable—such as definitions (mini-dictionaries), grammar explanations, and example sentences. For example, explaining what a verb is or creating read-aloud practice sentences. This allows me to build helpful materials efficiently and share them freely.

AI has also assisted with some shorter creative pieces, such as diary entries or writing prompts, where extended plot and character development were not required. Longer creative works—with developed arcs and themes—are written by me and reviewed by both AI and human readers.

AI is a tool. I instruct it what is to be written and why, often having a lengthy back-and-forth conversation before a piece is produced. I then review and adapt it before it appears here.

No one should have to defend volunteer efforts. If you are building literacy lessons to help a friend, neighbour, or student—and using AI responsibly to do it—you are still doing the work.

Why “Guided Reading Journey”?

GuidedReadingJourney.com is a free reading path for adults and their guides—flexible, self-paced, and shaped to fit each learner.

“Guided Reading Journey” is a term you may recognize from classrooms, but this site is designed for independent learners and their guides (coaches, tutors, friends) working together outside the school system.

Learners can explore on their own, and coaches can find materials to build or adapt lessons. It is not a fixed program.

Learners are encouraged to work through meaningful, everyday topics—such as driving, preparing meals, or talking to a doctor—even when a coach may not have a background in that area.

The goal is not to master a subject as an expert, but to build the reading skills needed to engage with it. Materials can be used as is, shaped by a coach, or skipped.

This site was built for adult learners and the coaches who support them. It is not backed by any institution—just created out of care, experience, and a desire to make learning accessible, flexible, and even a little fun.

Phase II Mission: Restoring Depth

mountain of books

In Phase I, we created a safe space for reading—gentle stories and articles without triggers, designed to help you grow confidence and skill.

Phase II (2026) and Phase III (2027) invites you to climb higher. Here, we take on great works of literature, history, and thought—texts that have shaped cultures and inspired generations. We won't water them down or hide their meaning. Instead, we'll make them reachable: step-by-step guides, vocabulary support, audio, and discussion will help you unlock the depth that movies and summaries often strip away.

The goal is not just to read, but to think deeply, feel widely, and see farther. Every book is a step upward; every idea opens a new window.

Why I built this site

I created this site because reading did not come easily to me. I spent six years working with a speech therapist in my early school years. Sounding out words was difficult — and reading followed from that challenge.

Over time, I developed strong study habits and eventually earned a degree in mathematics and computer science. I am still more comfortable with numbers than letters, but I understand how foundational skills are built step by step.

I have experience teaching adult computer courses and providing one-on-one training and support. I also spent a little time volunteering as a literacy coach.

Now retired, I have put together Guidedreadingjourney.com as a structured, free practice resource for adult readers and the people who support them.

This site is designed as a supplemental tool. It is not a replacement for formal literacy instruction, but it may be helpful for independent practice, tutoring sessions, or small-group support.

I believe reading builds quiet confidence.

If you need more help or are looking for formal education, start with your local library or literacy center. Staff can direct you to other local programs and resources.

Owls symbolize wisdom, intuition, and transformation across various cultures. I chose the owl as the emblem of this site — a quiet observer, wise and unseen.

Onwards!
Anna Ampleton
