Monday, we connected Sounds to print. Today, we’ll use the Meaning pathway to connect printed words with their meanings. Tomorrow, we’ll return to these same words and begin reading them in sentences using the Read-aloud pathway.

Choose the Meaning Pathway.

For today's lesson, I'll suggest spending about five minutes with each of these activities:

• Match Image to Word
• Match Definition to Word
• Explore the Mini-Dictionary

Together, they create another simple fifteen-minute literacy lesson.

Before we continue, there's something important to understand about these activities.

As an adult learner, unless English is new to you, you probably already know what most of these words mean. That's the point.

We're starting with something you already know — the meaning of the word — and using that knowledge to help anchor something you are learning: its printed form.

When you see a picture of a bed and match it to the word bed, you're not learning what a bed is. You're strengthening the connection between a familiar idea, the spoken word you already know, and the letters b-e-d on the page.
