Lesson: Telling Time with an Analog Clock

Telling time using an analog clock is a fundamental skill that helps with understanding the passage of time and managing daily activities.

What time is it?

An analog clock has three main components:

Hour Hand: This short hand indicates the hour.
Minute Hand: This longer hand shows the minutes.
Second Hand: This thin hand (if present) shows the seconds.

Understanding the Clock Face

An analog clock face is divided into 12 hours, and each hour is further divided into 5-minute increments, totaling 60 minutes for a full circle. The numbers 1 through 12 are evenly spaced around the clock face.

Reading the Time

Hour Hand: The hour hand moves from one number to the next as each hour passes. For example, if the hour hand is pointing at the 10, it is 10 o'clock. If it is halfway between 10 and 11, it is 10:30.

Minute Hand: The minute hand moves from one tick mark to the next to indicate each minute. If the minute hand is pointing at the 1, it is 5 minutes past the hour. If it is pointing at the 3, it is 15 minutes past the hour.

Second Hand: The second hand moves quickly, completing one full rotation every 60 seconds. Each tick mark represents one second.

Examples
3:00: The hour hand is on the 3, and the minute hand is on the 12.
4:15: The hour hand is slightly past the 4, and the minute hand is on the 3.
6:45: The hour hand is slightly before the 7, and the minute hand is on the 9.

Practice
Look at the clock and identify where the hour and minute hands are. Practice telling the time to the nearest minute.
