Divide Drill Words into Syllables
Review the rules for dividing words into syllables and then divide the drill words into syllables.
Rules:
- When possible, each syllable should begin with a consonant as in in-di-vi-si-ble.
- Two or more consonants forming one elementary sound, are never separated; such as 'ch'.
- The terminations, cean, cian, ceous, cious, cial, tion, tious, tial, geon, gian, geous, sion, are rarely divided.
- Compound words are divided into their simple single words; as in rail-road (railroad),
- The terminations of words (es, er, ing, y etc), when they form a syllable, are separated from their roots, as in writ-er.
- The accented syllable is designated by the mark (‘) or in some dictionary, the stressed syllable (syl-la-ble) is printed in bold type.

Use these two words together in a sentence.
Example: (flame, lit) Using her last match, she lit the flame.
